WAN for entire Chandigarh

13:-Chandigarh Administration’s plan for setting up a Wide Area Network for the entire Union Territory of Chandigarh was approved by Department of Information Technology, Government of India, which has sanctioned an amount of Rs.4 crores for the procurement of hardware, software & networking items. Chandigarh Administration has also approved an amount of Rs.5 crores additionally for the project in the next five years.
This amount would be spent over 5 years for meeting the operational and maintenance cost of the project. Apart from this, state Headquarter site under SWAN Project will be prepared and the same would be located in U.T. Secretariat. NICSI a GOI body, has been entrusted the task of preparation of the State of the art Centre, which will also act as the networking cum data centre.
A meeting of the SWAN Implementation Committee was also held today under the chairmanship of Director I.T, Mr. M.S. Brar to discuss and plan the modalities. It was attended by all senior officers of National Informatics Centre, which is technical consultant for the project, and Shri P Chandrekar, Additional Director I.T., Govt. of India and BSNL authorities from Chandigarh. Department of IT, Govt. of India. The details regarding the equipment and the bill of material for the project was approved. Under its efforts to strengthen E-Governance commitment, Chandigarh Administration is setting up State Wide Area Network (SWAN) under a Government of India Scheme.
Over the last few years the progress in Communications & information Technology, has been gradually building up in the city. The Chandigarh Administration has taken initiatives in ensuring back office computerization and its consolidation in order to cater citizen services. The reliable network backbone & last mile connectivity to be taken care under this scheme will significantly help further in Government to Government (G2G) & government to citizen (G2C) interfacing and bridging the gap. Under the SWAN scheme, Network & Data Centre at UT Secretariat will be connected with 7 Major PoPs (Points of Presence) - MC Office, DC Office, SDM South, SDM East, GSSH-16, GMCH-32 and Registering and Licencing Authority - in the City and around 125 sites including ESampark, Jan Sampark, Gram Sampark and other offices of Chandigarh Administration. The Administration is hoping to complete the task by the end of this financial year.
